Games you think should be played

Postby Tikithehutt » Thu Jan 31, 2008 3:36 pm

So I've started a little seminar up at my place of work, one that involves me teaching my co-workers about games and their genre's.

So I want to ask you the peoplez that know gamez, for advice on your top 2 or 3 games in each genre that you think define interesting parts of that genre. They should also represent quality, and at least one should be a sort of industry standard type awesome game. I just don't want to discourage you from picking sleeper hits. Also, think of it as a way to help me learn more about the music from games :)

Anyway, if you have opinions plaster them here and we can discuss!

Fighting:
-Tekken 5/6
-Guilty Gear XX
-Marvel Vs Capcom 2
((Special Induction)) Street Fighter 4

Reason behind choices:
Tekken- one of the most hard core of fighting games. Where button mashing is almost non existent compared to games like soul calibur. And if you do button mash. A quick and swift beating will be soon upon you. This is a game that requires technique and finesse to down your opponent, where even the weakest of moves can become deadly and momentum changers.

Guilty Gear XX - The characters and fighting style is a step away from most fighting games in general, and causes for many different strategies to come into play. Whether it is how to connect combos or avoid them this game is likely to keep your wits about you.

MVC2: A 3 man team frenzy featuring some of the most well known names in both of their respective worlds. Picking the right team, right assist, and fighting with you own unique style. A massive choice of over 50+ characters. You'll have hours of fun

SF4 - The game has over 7 awards and hasn't been released yet ((coming in February)) need I say more?

RPG:
-Nippon Ichi Series
-Golden Sun
-

Nippion Ichi - You just can't go wrong with a nippon Ichi game in terms of strategy play. With it's countless memorable. Whether it be Disgaea, Phantom Brave, La Pucelle Tactics, Makai Kingdom. This game company has games that are bound to keep you occupied for hours with not only story line but tough high Lv bosses and areas to test you best strategies.

gotta do a bit more research to pick more games. Expect more to come >_<

Thanks for the ideas! We're actually in the process of looking into possible songs for our next album so any inspiration is good!

Did anyone here ever play Gunsmoke for the original NES?

I have to seriously disagree with this. Tekken has to be one of the dumbest, slowest, and relentlessly boring fighting games ever made. With controls that feel like you're playing with boxing gloves on, of course, you might as well play with gloves on because the combos never amount to anything more than tapping out pre-defined mashing patterns, some of which inflict over 60% damage so that the entire match lasts fewer than 15 seconds.

Never played much Tekken outside of the arcade. Can't speak to the fighting system from much personal experience, but I remember seeing people using that Martial Law guy and doing that flip kick thing over and over.

Then you must be a very poor player or play with some very poor people. People who even try to use a pre-set string combo get mutilated horribly by a actually player for the simple fact that everyone would know the combo on sight. Tekkens controls are very decent and more of a realistic feel to fighting similar to virtual fighter instead of ridicules fast paced and unrealistic fight such as marvel vs capcom and smash brothers.

Tekken unlike most fighting games actually requires skill and some though rather than button mashing your way to a win like and especially in games such as soul calibur, The fact that you mention the 3 biggest button mashing fighting franchises in the fighting game industry leads me to believe the complex gameplay that didn't allow to you to swing around randomly like a made man with a vendetta against his joystick made it boring to you.

And if someone uses the same move on you repeatedly it's because they know your gonna keep falling for it. That the point of learning don't cha think. I mean if you know it's coming counter it.

I think it's funny you think SSB is a button masher, personally lol. To use one of your phrases "Then you must be a very poor player or play with some very poor people." :P

Just because you don't have to hit "up up down down rotate 45-deg low kick mid kick" to pull off a combo in SSB doesn't mean it doesn't take a lot of skill and reflexes to be competitive.

Take care when making such broad, sweeping statements :P All of the games take skill, simply differing skillsets.
